Very relevant is Lee Smolin's article about funding, innovation and diversity:

http://www.physicstoday.org/vol-58/iss-6/pdf/vol58no6p56_57.pdf

but Smolin is more concerned with funding allotment within accepted institutions, rather than encouragments of outsiders (dubious or not).

Ernie: You live in the midwest. You see fat-ass midwesterners every day! Do you know the market for a product which would make those people more comfortable?

You just gave me a topic for my next grant proposal. Thanks.

JeffE

Dear god, no! The last thing midwesterners need is something that makes them MORE comfortable!

No, your work on "fat polytopes" should not go to waste.
